Psalm 1:1-2
1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Last week I was given a gift by one of my piano students. It was something I LOVE… smooth, creamy, decadent, dark DOVE chocolate. Chocolate makes me smile. Chocolate makes me happy, but DOVE dark chocolate… now that makes me feel extraordinarily special! It brings me GREAT DELIGHT! [insert exaggeration]
In today’s devotion, we see that the BLESSED; godly man has a characteristic that defines him and separates him from the ungodly. He has something he DELIGHTS in! Remember, the word “blessed” means to be happy! Ps. 1:2 shows us the real source of his happiness, in which he delights, is God’s Word! All through Scripture, we find verses that describe how important and precious Scripture is to the child of God.
Psalm 119:105
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Isaiah 40:8
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever
Psalm 18:30
As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried:he is a buckler to all those that trust in him
Psalm 119:130
The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
Psalm 119:114
Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.
Psalm 119:160
Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.
Proverbs 4:5
Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
God’s Word is a necessity for the Christian!
Yes, DOVE dark chocolate is quite AMAZING, but let’s get real here! My love for chocolate doesn’t even compare to the delight the psalmist has in the Word of God. He describes such a deep sense of pleasure, satisfaction, and joy that he can’t get his mind off it. The blessed man meditates therein day and night! He is CONTINUALLY thinking about and meditating on The Holy Word of God!
God’s Word was so precious to him that he constantly pondered its vast truths. When is the last time that you and I were so captivated with God’s Word that we couldn’t stop thinking about it? I’m sure we all would be ashamed if the truth were told. Whenever we get to the place God’s Word is so very dear to us that it consumes our thinking, it will undoubtedly consume every part of our being – our speech, actions, motives, passions, everything about us! God’s Word can and will change who we are!
Think on These Things ~ DELIGHT in God’s Word today and be BLESSED!
