Breath of God

Breath of God
Edwin Hatch

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
fill me with life anew,
that I may love the way you love,
and do what you would do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
until my heart is pure,
until my will is one with yours,
to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
so shall I never die,
but live with you the perfect life
for all eternity.

When my babies were little, I loved to hold them close and feel their sweet breath on my neck as they slept. As precious as that was, there is one breath that I desire even more; the breath of the Holy Spirit.

In Genesis 2:7 we see the first mention of the breath of God. God breathed into man, and it produced LIFE.

Genesis 2:7
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

In this verse, God gave physical life, but it still was life. God can only produce life. There’s nothing dead or dark in Him. He is the light of the world; He is the breath of life. Only on the cross of Calvary was the Son of God associated with death and darkness, and that was for you and me. He had to lay His glory, His light, His majesty and power, His life down so that He could suffer our punishment, our Hell. But, praise God, death could not keep Him down. Three days later, death had to lose Him and set Him free because He is LIFE!

Then in the New Testament, we see another form of God breathing life; spiritual life.

Acts 2:1-4a
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost,

We do not see the word breathe or breath in this passage, but I would like to use the word “wind” in exchange for the breath of God. Since it is obvious, it was God moving.

Acts 2:2a
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind,

Acts 2:4
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost,

Here we see God giving spiritual life to His disciples through the Holy Ghost. God has breathed the Holy Spirit into the heart of every believer at the very moment of Salvation. He changed us from death unto life.

John 5:24
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

We live in a day where Christians are relying on themselves, the carnal man, to live out their Christian life. This is why we often live defeated and discouraged, and powerless. God did not intend for it to be this way. He provides the indwelling Spirit to empower us to give us victory. We cannot be the light or the life we need to be when we are operating in our own flesh instead of the power of God.

Friend, there is nothing I want more than God’s anointing on my life. I want to be a wife and Momma filled with God’s presence. I want to serve and love others filled with God’s power. I want to sing and minister with God’s touch. I want the breath of God in my life so that I can be the Christian God intended for me to be and to point others to Him.

Think on these things ~ Just as breath is necessary for physical life, the Breath of God is crucial to living out a Spirit-filled life.
